Michael Wesely

The shots above are of the re-construction of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The photos were taken using 8 cameras positioned at various places around the construction site. These shots were exposed for 34 months between 2001-2004. Whatever technique he’s using, I think it’s safe to assume he’s left a wake of envious photographers eager to learn his secrets. According to Michael, he could do exposures for up to 40 years.

I love his work, but however I have not tried this method as I have firstly not had time waiting for an 1h exposure in this shitty Brisbane weather....

Overlay pictures when printing

Overlay 2 - 4 pictures (taken from a chosen point) of particular places, spaces, buildings in Brisbane

Double Exposure

It just needs this..

Empty Lot
1. Take a picture of an empty lot.
2. Take a picture of a building, then develop the picture of the building.
3. Go back to the site and take a picture of the picture, of the building, in front off it.

(or double exposure when printing)

Howard Smith Wharfs

Ideas

  • Taking a roll of film for one building 6 shots, starting from the top, go downwards, the proof sheet makes up the picture
  • Taking pictures from top of buildings, top of other buildings, maybe iconic ones
  • Taking photo of a texture, develop it and then take a new photo with the previous photo attached to the texture
  • Undefined spaces - what is it
  • Take pictures of all the the buildings i like, collage it back together
  • Facades
  • Long exposures
  • Double exposure of building elements i like, (or two good things about the same building)
  • Take picture of just one aspect of the building-can you recognize it out from just that one shot?

Potential Portfolio themes

Since I'm studying architecture this is a natural starting point. If i wanna precede architecture for my final portfolio work I'm not sure of yet, but this is where I'll start.

What is architecture and what defines architecture? How we look at architecture, space and time is different  for every individual, but in the end the building remain the same.

  • Merging spaces
  • Undefined Spaces
  • 'grey' areas
  • Architecture and nature
  • Contemporary architecture vs  historic architecture
  • The ugly, bad and the good
  • Small-Large-X large
  • Form follows function or Function follows Form?
  • Iconic architecture
  • Architecture can define a city
  • Architecture and human scale
  • How do we interact with architecture in our everyday life?

The list can go on and on, but think I'll start with a quick research about the questions raised above:)
